Is it illegal to ask for money on the internet? Not selling anything?

Not as long as you are honest about your intended use of the money and you report the money you receive as income on your taxes.

No, Now give me ten bucks
Reply:not if people willingly donate it with the understanding that they will be getting nothing in return...you would have to claim it on your taxes though....I think, but I'm not positive, that the limit is 10,000 that can be received as an untaxed gift and after that they start taxing, but again, don't quote me on that.
Reply:No, it's not illegal, but why would someone on the internet just give you money? Why don't you get out and work for it like all other civilized human beings? That's the real question.
Reply:It's legal to beg or ask for money, sure, as long as your claims are true - if you lie about collecting money for a certain reason, then that's false advertising.

But just asking for money doesn't mean you'll get any - people are pretty reluctant to give away their hard-earned money and get nothing in return.
Reply:Politicians and charities do it all the time.
