How do free websites like youtube, myspace.com and other internet websites earn money?

They make a pittance by selling advertising space. Mostly, the founders make money by making their sites really popular and then selling the business to someone else who has to figure out how to make money off it. MySpace was sold to Fox, and YouTube was sold to Google.

Notice at the bottom of myspace.com there is a link that has advertise. Well myspace charges advertisers for space on the site. Whether it be permanent space ...so no matter what page you are on within the site you will see the same banner ad. Or certain pages.





Google Adwords


See the search box at the top of myspace.com that says "powered by google" well if someone enters text into that field and hits enter myspace gets paid. So every time you click a banner or a google ad word link the website owner gets paid a referral fee so to speak to from the company who placed the banner on their site.





Most of the time it is just change per click but think of how many people surf and spend time on my space and you tube. Lots of clicks means lots of cha ching! LOL!
